Got bored of ‘Google’ text on the Google search engine page? Well, you can change the text in the Google logo with ease. But, you need to have Firefox installed in order to try this little trick. Here’s how you do it:

Start Firefox and install the GreaseMonkey addon.

Once installed, restart the browser and go to Google.com

Install the Google Logo text edit script.

Double click on the Google Logo, a small box should pop up which looks like the one shown above.

You can also change the colour of the text. (You can use the following numbers- 1 for blue, 2 for red, 3 for yellow, 4 for green or any other– random)

Click the ‘Change’ button when you’re done, Voila! You should now see the text you typed earlier in the form of a logo on the Google homepage.

Not only the fonts but also other objects appear out of proportion. Well, in such a case you can do the following to correct it.

Press Ctrl + 0 [It’s ‘zero’, not the alphabet ‘O’]

This will restore the page size and the fonts to default.

There are several URL shortening services these days and we come across several short URLs everywhere. The best examples are on Twitter and Facebook. But, did you ever feel that the destination of the URL isn’t safe? I’m sure you did. But, you might have clicked it straightaway or simply avoided it as you didn’t know the URL destination before clicking on it.

There’s an extension for Firefox known as Verify Redirect which allows you to see the link destination before actually clicking on it. You simply need to hover your mouse over it and it will display the link destination.

I don’t really understand the reason behind keeping a chat feature in Facebook. I know it’s meant for instant messaging! But, then what are Instant Messengers for? Facebook isn’t an IM, it’s just a social networking website. There are several reason why I hate the Facebook chat feature. Firstly, it’s buggy! If many Facebook windows are opened in Firefox, you’ll not be able to send messages. You need to minimize and maximize the chat box everytime you type a message. Another reason, some people keep bugging you. Well, if you are a person like me and would like to remove Facebook chat feature then here’s what you do.

How to Remove Chat from Facebook

You need to install Firefox if you don’t have it as this trick will work only on Firefox.

Install the AdBlock Plus addon and restart the browser.

Now, open Facebook in a new page and login with your ID. On the right hand top corner, click on the ABP icon and choose ‘Preferences’.

Click on ‘Add Filter’. In the new Filter box enter the following rule:

facebook.com#div(id*=presence)

Once done, click on ‘OK’. It should look something like the above.

(Before removing Facebook chat toolbar)

(After removing Facebook chat toolbar)

You’ll immediately notice that the Chat box and the toolbar have disappeared. Voila! The chat feature is permanently removed.

If you’re an Opera user you might be aware that you cannot install user scripts easily like you would in Firefox. Previously, I had written a post on installing Greasemonkey scripts in Opera. It was a manual method. But, now with the newer version of Opera (v 10.10), you can easily install Javascripts.

An Opera user Rafal has come up with a JavaScript manager for Opera. To install this manager you need to get the latest version of Opera as it requires Opera unite. Create a new Opera Unite account and then download UJS manager.

How to Manage JavaScript’s in Opera using UJS Manger?

Managing scripts with the UJS Manager is pretty easy. Once the UJS Manger is installed click on the wheel next to the UJS Manger. An Opera Unite application settings box will open. Browse and choose a folder where you would like to save JavaScript’s and use them.

Now, download your favorite javascript and save it in the folder you chose above and restart Opera.

Click on the Unite icon in the sidebar and choose UJS Manager. On the right hand side you’ll notice that the script is installed. To disable it click on the green tick icon next to the script. It will get disabled. You can click on it again to enable it.

I got hold of Opera 10 the moment it was out. I upgraded over Opera 9.6 and I lost all my bookmarks, speed dials and wand passwords. Well, apart from that, I was greatly pleased with the revamped look of Opera. The new large tab view is amazing. And, the Turbo mode is one feature that everyone should have a look at. If you never ever tried Opera browser then you must try it, at least for the Turbo Mode feature.

If you aren’t aware of the Turbo Mode then it’s a new feature in the Opera 10 Browser that allows a page to load really fast by compressing the images. When this mode is enabled, Opera’s servers will compress the images and other graphic elements from a webpage and send them to your browser, resulting in a faster load time. It is suitable for those users who are using a slow internet connection, such as dial-up connection or shared internet connection with slow speeds.

How to Enable or Disable Turbo Mode?

On the left hand bottom corner of the browser you’ll see a small watch like icon, next to it there’s a arrow. Click on it and select ‘Configure Opera Turbo’

Now a new window will pop up just like the above. Here there are three options- ‘Automatic’, ‘On’ and ‘Off’. If you choose ‘Automatic’, Turbo mode will be enabled only when the internet speed is slow. If you choose ‘On’, Turbo mode will be ‘On’ every time you browse a website. To disable choose ‘Off’.

The Turbo mode really enhances the loading speeds. But, sometimes the images aren’t clear as they are compressed.

We all love emoticons! I feel chatting is incomplete without emoticons on smilies. I’m sure many of you will agree on this point. If you use Facebook chat you may have noticed that it doesn’t have any smilies to click on and send to your friend. But, the truth is that there are many hidden smilies. You can have a look at the hidden smilies list on djod.co.uk.

Memorizing those codes for every smilie and then using them is not an easy task. So what’s the solution? Well, there’s a greasemonkey script which allows you to get smilies directly in the chat window. Once installed you can simply click on the smilie and hit enter, it will reach your friends chat window. Ahhh! Go smilie power!

How to get emoticons/ smilies in Facebook chat window?
First of all, to get this working you need to be using Firefox.

Start Firefox and go to the Greasemonkey addon page and install it.

Once installed, restart the browser. You should now see a monkey icon on the right hand side bottom of the Firefox window.

Now go to Facebook Chatbar+ addon and simply click on install and restart Firefox.

Go to Facebook.com and log into your account and check out the chat window of your friend. You should a whole set of emoticons within the window itself. You can simply click on them and send. Ain’t that easy?

Most of us listen to music online. One of my favorite sites is playlist.com. You too might have listened to songs on playlist.com. Well, the drawback is that you can only listen to songs on this site but you cannot download them. But there’s a little trick. When you play a particular file it actually downloads it! The downloaded file is stored in the temporary folder which later gets deleted. So the trick is pretty simple, first you need to clear your browsers temporary folder, go to playlist.com and play a song. Check in the temporary folder once the song buffers fully. You can simply copy the file to your hard disk. And later add the extension .mp3 to it, it should work perfectly. This is what I do in my Opera browser. The same trick applies to other online music sites which allow you to listen music online but don’t allow you to download.

Well, I found a video on YouTube which explains you the procedure in detail, it may vary a little bit but the concept behind it remains the same. You can check it out below:

Today I would like to share with you two Firefox addons which will help you to save a lot of space while browsing. Sometimes when you open a lot of tabs it results in clutter on the top and you tend to get confused with the tabs. To solve this problem there’s an awesome addon- Tree Style Tab. Tree Style Tab displays tabs on the left, right top or bottom of your screen. Left side is much preferable though. The tabs are grouped and displayed in the form of tree view. For instance if you have two or three pages of a particular site open then those will be listed under one tab. This is a really good feature as it helps to avoid confusion.

Tree Style Tab is a good addon but you might feel it consumes a lot of width on the side and the default tab view was better. Well, if that’s the case then you can make use of the FaviconizeTab addon. FaviconizeTab serves as a very good combination with Tree Style Tab.

This addon will list the tabs on the basis of favicons of the websites as shown above. But you won’t be able to see the description of the tab. Well, if you can manage with favicons then its fine. I feel it shouldn’t be a problem. I feel accessing tabs is much more convenient on the left hand side with these addons rather than top. What’s your opinion?

Get Tree Style Tab addon
Get FaviconizeTab addon

I’m sure Windows 7 users using Firefox aren’t happy as Firefox doesn’t show jumplists in Windows 7 taskbar. Jumplists form an important part in Windows 7, when a program is minimized it is shown as an icon in the taskbar. When the mouse is hovered over the icon, a jumplist is displayed which shows various options regarding the program concerned. For instance if you minimize Internet Explorer you should see an IE icon on the taskbar which when hovered over displays various options and open tabs in the form of a jumplist.

Now if you tried minimizing Firefox you may have noticed that this doesn’t work the way you did with IE. But don’t you worry! Winfox helps you in this situation. It’s a small app (not an extension) that will put the top 15 websites with favicons, ‘Open New Tab’ and ‘Open New Windows’ in your Firefox Jumplist in the taskbar. You can also pin the websites on your Jumplist, which is very useful for quick access. Like Internet Explorer, you’ll also be able to see the different open tabs just by hovering over the taskbar button of Firefox. You need to run this app while using Firefox. You can download it from below.

Winfox features:
Recent Items support (limited to fifteen items)
Tasks support
Pin support
FirefoxURL handling (dragging Firefox pages)
Auto-detection of the Firefox directory and user profile
FavIcon support (downloads top fifteen favicons to your Firefox Cache directory)
Launch Firefox by clicking on the Winfox icon (if Winfox is running)
Linking of all open Firefox windows – Sets all Firefox windows to use Winfox (only if Winfox is running)

Are you an Opera fan like me? Then here’s something cool to try out if you like the Speed dial feature in Opera. If you noticed the number of speed dial boxes you’ll find that there are nine of them, i.e, 3 rows and 3 columns. Here’s a small trick if you want to increase the number of boxes.

1. To add more speed dial boxes, you need to edit a file named speeddial.ini which is located in your Opera profile directory (you can find out the location by typing opera:about in the Opera address bar and note the path to Preferences Folder). By default it is,

C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\Opera\Opera\Profile.

2. Once you find the location of the file close Opera.

3. Now open speeddial.ini and add the following code:

[Size]
Rows=5
Columns=5

4. Once done, save and exit.

5. Now start Opera for changes to take effect. You should be able to see 20 slots now.
