How to Make a Folder or File Super Hidden in Vista and XP

There are a few files in both windows XP and Vista which are super hidden. Such files cannot be viewed by changing the hide folder option to view all hidden files. I had previously written an article on viewing super hidden files over here. You can check it if you want to view super hidden files. Well, if we can view them can we make any file/ folder super hidden? Well, yes.

So, why do we really need to super hide files/ folders?
To keep files/ folders more secure and safe.
Super hidden files/ folders become system files and changing the super hidden property of these files and folders is normally not possible.
Super hidden files/ folders cannot be viewed even if the “view hidden files and folders” setting is ticked.

Here’s a short tutorial to super hide files and folders. It works for both XP as well as Vista.

Firstly create a file with the name “123”

Now, Go to Start> Run>cmd

Type attrib “filename or folder with complete path” +s +h (without quotes). For instance, if the folder you want to super hide is located in C: drive then the path is C:\123. You need to type “attrib C:\123 +s +h” without the quotes.

That’s it the folder is now hidden. You can do the same with files as well.

Errr… this is nonsense. Making a file or folder have System and Hidden NTFS/FAT attributes is NOT synonymous with making them Windows “SuperHidden”.

    SuperHidden is something completely different.

Not even super hidden! If this were super hidden you would be able to use it to see the files in content.ie5.

I’m shocked that BizznTech would even allow information this WRONG to be published on their site.

Your statement “Here’s a short tutorial to super hide files and folders…” has NOTHING AT ALL to do with the steps you give. The finaly statement you make however is correct. “That’s it the folder is now hidden. You can do the same with files as well.” It’s correct because you made the file or folder Hidden, NOT SuperHidden.

All you people who say this is wrong, not right, and just incorrect, need to do some more research before making false claims. It does work, with Vista atleast cause thats what I am running. First you need to make sure in your registry that the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AdvancedChange, the ShowSuperHidden key value is set to 0.
By default it should be set to 1 (which means it will show)

There are 4 types of file attributions: Read-only, Archive, System and Hidden. (+R +A +S +H). You can only check 3 of them when you right click a file and choose Properties. That “+S” does not stand for “super”. It stands for “system” !

My Computer – Tools – Folder Options
    or
    Control Panel – Folder Options

Then from the View tab you can uncheck “Hide Protected operating system files (Recommended)”. And there you go. You can now see them.

To make the super hidden files back to normal just do as following
    run>cmd

Drive name:\attrib file or folder path -s -h

    eg C:\attrib D:\ABC\abc.txt -s -h

If I super hide my files can my programs still access them? I don’t want users to see these files (so they can’t mess with them), but the programs they use still need to access them. Is this possible?
