I’m currently using messenger version 8.1 and have been experiencing issues with display pictures showing up as plain black. This even happens with my own picture which I am unable to change. I have tried to uninstall then scrub the PC, defrag then reinstall the program with no success. I have come upon a free registry cleaner by glary utilitys that might work to restore the picture by removing bad registry entries among other things. If all else fails, I have a copy of yahoo! messenger 6.0 that will install from a cd with no net connection required. If by some chance you have another route to restoring my ability to see and to change my display image then I’m all ears.
